Frank Moore’s The Uncomfortable Zones Of Fun
experiments in experience/participation performance
Recorded at Temescal Arts Center, Oakland, California
Saturday, June 25, 2011

This is the performance we did last Saturday (my sixty fifth birthday).

Well, sometimes I have an actor planted in the audience as an extremely uptight and extremely irrational person. This person sucks up all the hesitation from the room, making being afraid look so silly to the rest of the audience that they jump fully into the meat of the performance if only to not to be like him. "The artist's model" played this role perfectly! But this group didn't need such a plant. They came to play to change society! Quite a few had come to past performances and understood what was happening on deeper layers. And the new people were using art in their lives as their means to change society. So this just took them to a new level. The artist's model just provided the right amount of resistance so that we could explore important issues.

And then we melted much deeper than ever before in performance into direct explicit erotic friction rubbing pleasure arousing states of play which released great amounts of freedom and exploring of intimacy. This was made possible in part by Nat's lusty willingness to rub Linda and me into her without any limits as we rocked and danced extremely nakedly together to the music of Tomek and his playmates. But others matched Nat's amazing beautiful sexy willingness while playing gestures together. This opened new doors in their relationships! WHAT A WAY TO SPEND MY BIRTHDAY!

FRANK MOORE’S CHEROTIC ALL-STAR BAND with THE WOMENTORS

Visit the web site for this series: https://eroplay.com/goingdeeptothecore/index.html

I can die now because unworthy I, being a mere male bimbo nude go-go dancer, was abused by the queens of sleaze, The Womentors...carrot dildos, bloody tampons, freezing beer on my bare skin, etc... but all paled into sharp pain when my fellow bimbo dancer Fluff Grrl's bob in his sexual zeal started pushing me in my chair around the space full speed, unknowingly ramming my bum knee into the corner of a p.a. speaker!

But the show must go on! Womentors turned into Cherotic All-Stars for the jam with john the baker. And Raman’s Mykee...a jam of hot licks...and Linda and Erika also did some hot licking!

Kimo's San Francisco, California
August 8, 2003

It was the first time I introduced much more explicit eroticism into the meat of the performance. Also I had the cameraman nude moving onstage, bringing you extremely intimate with the rubbing aroused melting bodies. So much so that you feel like you are within the erotic action!

Frank Moore’s The Uncomfortable Zones Of Fun
experiments in experience/participation performance
Recorded at Temescal Arts Center, Oakland, California
Saturday, February 27, 2010.

Below is what I wrote after this performance:

Ah! How do you measure success in a performance? Maybe when the audience [the people who come to the performance] start crying uncontrollably over releases of blocks that just disappeared just by walking through them with willingness and trust. Or maybe when a young sexy co-ed rocks nude on your lap, arousing all kinds of new possibilities. Or maybe when you attract a wide range of people, all ready to go all the way into the volcano, melting into a cozy little joyful community, willing to be uncomfortable and whatever else it takes to go into adventures of fun, floating on the mood music of Kene-J and a psychology grad student… The community so strong that they [most of them] kept staying, playing together, long after the “performance” was “over”, and then most of them went to an apartment of one of them to continue hanging out together! And I’m not even getting into what they said of how the performance effected them! [see below for that!] I am just glad I didn’t get in the way of the potential of the night!

Yep! It was a great deep success! And the series is clearly building, tapping into the young art school student community, among other groups. Ah, yes, very dangerous and subversive! You need to do something for at least a year to start this kind of building. And it goes in waves. The art student came months ago. She went home all Shining and open and vulnerable and creative. Her roommates and friends saw the changes in her. So when they came, they were ready to go into it explicitly. This audience was the most explicitly ready in over a year!

This is a private performance shot in the early eighties. That was the time that I was coming up with the concepts and rituals that I would use for decades afterwards. I had just coined the word EROPLAY for intense aroused physical play which didn't include intercourse or orgasms. I created the first, very linear version of my ritual GESTURES to explore the possibilities and limits of EROPLAY. Holly was a university student with a lusty willingness, trust, and understanding of EROPLAY.

Gestures - Barbara

This is another private performance shot in the early eighties. Barbara was a grad student studying Greek with a lusty willingness, trust, and understanding of EROPLAY. I met her when we were filming EROTIC PLAY which she is in. In fact, we got together to talk and play several times to help me define EROPLAY.

Frank Moore For President 2008 Platforms

Ah, yes! I did spend two years running for president as a write in candidate! It is one of my most effective performances! It inspired a lot of people, forced changes in Laws in several states, attracted a lot of mainstream European press coverage, and gave me a platform on which to address issues. SEE, I AM NOT JUST A HUNK!

Extreme Elvis, Xtian & Frank Moore's Cherotic All-Star Band
November 17, 2001
Burnt Ramen, Richmond, California

Well, this was the period when I was producing a lot of music shows at the infamous illegal underground punk club THE BURNT RAMEN. this was the last two acts of a very long show. Traditionally my band closed the shows. Also, traditionally I cherry picked musicians from the other bands of the night to be in my band. But this show the musicians kept leaving during the show [the club was in the most dangerous neighborhood]. So at this point when I was the next act, I had no band except for Xtian [aka Christian Lunch] and a flock of nude women. So in the middle of Extreme Elvis's set [which I consider one of the top five performances of ALL rock 'n'roll history!], I asked Elvis if I could borrow his band. So our two sets melted together! Btw, we performed in what normally passed for the GREEN ROOM there because that was where E literally pitched his tent!

Performance series at University of California, Berkeley
Recorded April 4, 2003.

This is one of the most jam packed nights of this underground series we did for two years on the university. This night included the world famous photographer Eric Kroll doing a shoot with a beautiful nude model (she ended up whippimod), a mad naked woman keening, a guy who looked a lot like Extreme Elvis who I got to sing IN THE GHETTO with a trance band (including Lena the Jaw Harp Queen) backing him as most of the "audience" danced nude erotically playfully together. What a night!

"Gestures" at Dr. Susan Block's Speakeasy, 2000.

Well, this is one of the times I was on my good friend Suzy Block's show at her Speakeasy. This starts after she interviewed Linda and I on her bed. We are setting up to do my ritual audience participation performance. But all of the men [including my brother] chose to sit and watch on the sidelines. This left Suzy, Kim, Linda, and other beautiful sexy extremely willing women that are always at the Speakeasy to do the erotic ritual with me! I have a rough life! The ritual was hot! But things even got hotter and more explicit after the formal ritual ended and dirty dancing started with erotic friction rubbing!

Frank Moore's Cherotic All-Star Band at Dr. Susan Block's Speakeasy, Los Angeles, CA.

This was a HOT EXPLICIT night both on and off of the stage. In the next room there was a full blown orgy going on. But the real erotic action was in our performing space! My band was big and cooking that night, and beautiful nude women were rubbing everywhere both on and off stage! Ah, just another night at my good friend (and my presidential running mate) doctor Suzy Block's SPEAKEASY!

Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Wild Cat Studio, Berkeley, California.

This was the kind of night that at first it looked like nothing would happen. But then it turned out that a guy in the audience was a butoh dancer. So he and I did a long surreal slow naked dance together. This erotically enlivened the whole tribal body into direct explicit participation! You never know!

Frank Moore’s The Uncomfortable Zones Of Fun

experiments in experience/participation performance
Recorded at Temescal Arts Center, Oakland, California
Saturday, April 23, 2011

This is a night of the monthly performance series I have been doing for over two years in Oakland, California. At first I called the series REALITY PLAYINGS. But when people kept yapping about how I threatened their comfort zones, I changed the title to THE UNCOMFORTABLE ZONES OF FUN.

For three hours I totally improvise around who comes. So I never know what will happen next. Often it gets very surreal erotic by the end!

From the poster: Frank Moore, world-known shaman performance artist, will conduct improvised passions of musicians, actors, dancers, and audience members
in a laboratory setting to create altered realities of fusion beyond taboos. Bring your passions and musical instruments and your senses of adventure and humor.
Other than that, ADMISSION IS FREE! (But donations are encouraged.)

Surf Reality, New York City 9/19/02

Go with us beyond time and space into the inner planet known as lila. Witness the primal warm passion naked erotic ritual of tribal melting into playing, long and slow, melting into bodies of sexual colors!

-------
This is the second time I performed at SURF REALITY in N.Y.C.

I think there is never one single performance.  Instead, there is a web work of an infinite number of pieces expanding from before what is commonly thought of as THE PERFORMANCE to long after THE PERFORMANCE.  It is impossible to see or know all of this web work.  To show what I mean, I had two cameras shoot this.  And they focused on entirely different erotic details, creating two remarkably different performances!

This video includes both cameras/versions.  The second version focuses on erotic details. First version by Michael LaBash. Second version by Les Barany.

The Nude Cave is Frank Moore's feature-length erotic music video/abstract art turn-on ... ideal for surfing the web with/to (among other things) ... or zone out within a pleasure trance!

In this I mined the same footage as I mined for my EROTIC PLAY. But in this I created a long surreal abstract erotic collage by slowing down and speeding up the footage. I also did the sound track by playing a couple of synthesizers with my head pointer. I laid down three tracks by playing to the visuals. Because of the primitive nature of the equipment, I couldn't hear the previous layers when I was playing the next track. Oh, yes, I hadn't played /composed music before!

I edited THE NUDE CAVE with two remotes taped on a table before me using my head pointer. What we do when we have no money and when we are ahead of the technology! We just made videos and put them in our closet. And now the same videos are being watched by people all over the world on THE FRANK MOORE CHANNEL [even on their television]! Thank God we didn't care whether people would ever see the stuff. We just did them to do them! And now we have a shit load of content!

NYC Interview

Frank Moore interviewed at Annie Sprinkle's apartment
in NYC, May 19, 1987.

Well, this was the day after a film crew shot my performance for the film MONDO NEW YORK.  We shot this interview in Annie Sprinkle's apartment.  In fact Annie was in the next room interviewing  Karen Finley.  During my interview I predicted the coming culture war.  But little did I know all three of us would be targeted by senator Jesse Helms as "obscene" artists less than two years from then!

Frank Moore performance, Sixth Sense Gallery, NYC, 5.19.1987

This performance was featured in the film Mondo New York.

Well, the first ten minutes of this piece was over whelmed by the bright  camera lights of MONDO NEW YORK.  But after they left, magic settled in.  One of the nude body painted dancers was Annie Sprinkle.  And the nude body rocking on my lap was another sex star, Veronica Vera, who at the end of the performance did an in-depth interview of me, BOTH OF US NUDE!  I have a rough job!

An Act Of Direct Engagement
POW! POW! Action Art Festival

Recorded at the Climate Theater, San Francisco, California
Friday, October 16, 2009

Well, for this one about a third of the audience ran out of the room from fear [which is strange because it actually was a festival of "dangerous" performances]; another third froze in their seats ignoring the nude dancers [ditto!]. The final third loved it! A very successful piece!

Live at the Stork Club, Oakland, CA June 7, 2002.

Extreme Elvis was a popular and controversial act in San Francisco in the early '00's, pissing and shitting on his audience members, etc. For some reason he and I did a lot of shows together. He asked me to switch identities with him for this SRO gig. His band [except for one of his sexy backup singers who pushed me through the crowd and onto the stage] didn't know the plan until I got on stage! Things to look for: the band protecting me from a couple of Nazi skinheads; my pulling down the tanktops of the backup singers; and when one of those same sexy backup singers pissed in my nude lap!

Recorded 7.26.92 at L.A.C.E., Los Angeles.

Between when THE OUTRAGEOUS BEAUTY REVUE died in the early eighties and when I started jamming with my CHEROTIC ALL STAR BAND in the nineties, one thing I did was sing as THE ROCK STAR in clubs, wailing to taped songs which I ordered into a musical journey up to two hours. This is the ultimate example of THE ROCK STAR! Beautifully lit and shot! Every so often Linda Mac joined me to do one of our hits. And halfway through everything got erotic surreal ritualized wrapping rocking! But please piss before you watch this or you shall piss your pants when I do duets with Mikee! And if you don't want to see blood, be sure to turn it off before the end when an over aroused audience member has her way with me when I am trying to keep singing!

6-hour performance held on Saturday, August 25, 2001 at sPACe, Brooklyn, NY.

Camera by Les Barany.

Well, this is the best example of what happens in my long ritual performances. People playing nude erotically together, playing music jamming together, dancing rubbing together for hours! Meanwhile I was hidden in a tent cave for most of the time! Use your imagination for what was happening in the tent cave. I used the many talents of the Hatt Brothers [Frank and Fred]. But we had to carry our poor cameraman out after his legs gave out after six hours of shooting!

A surreal erotic examination of an intimate relationship of need. 1989.

Starring Frank Moore and Linda Sibio.

"One of the most erotic things I've ever seen."
Richard Schechner

"Honorable Mention Award, Feature Length Video--East Bay Video Festival"

It ('Out of Isolation') was the best film, in many respects, that I have ever seen. It is a classic, underground masterpiece, and I was deeply impressed by (Frank Moore's) sense of movement, aesthetic, humanity and taboo."
Jim Cohn, St. Lawrence University

("Out of Isolation") "stayed in my mind far more persistently than I first expected, at least based on what the film-makers with millions of dollars at their disposal call 'production values' and 'professional polish'. What most of these high-priced pieces lack, of course, is substance and a genuinely different -- and deeply challenging -- point of view. Something to shake up, shatter, shame, inspire, perspire, ponder and play with long after the cassette gets rewound. Your films did that for me: they are definitely not easy to absorb, follow, or even 'enjoy' in the ordinary pop-culture sense. But you don't forget watching them, ever."
Scott Lankford, Foothill College.

"And the central irony of the title 'Out of Isolation' as it is revealed is truly unforgettable: the nurse's everyday American loneliness is so much sadder, so much more impenetrable than that of the man she hopes to 'cure.' In this sense, the film makes a bold attempt to break through the cultural/intellectual isolation of the viewer; to stretch our imaginations in ways they have never been moved and stretched before due to our own cradle-to-grave institutionalization within the rigid mindset of everyday America. Which may explain why, even when the film seems painful to watch, it remains powerful: it stretches the imagination in new and different, sometimes painful directions."
Scott Lankford, Foothill College

"A very powerful film."
Jack Foley

“That’s simply lovely. It also spells out to me why you are admirable, why someone handled – of course, what else -- by bony fingers, could emerge without a shred of self-pity and with a true, an unsentimental love of humanity encompassing the most uncompromising rejection of those who make life miserable for the vast majority, whether “normal” or disabled.
Obviously someone who cannot enjoy physical pleasures available to the rest of us – running, swimming, skiing, using one’s muscles in competition with nature or other humans – will particularly explore the pleasures of sex, and will pose to the rest of us questions as to the “appropriateness” of our behaviors in that regard.”
Bill Mandel

“Enjoyed watching “Out of Isolation”. Although I don’t think enjoyed is the proper word. It was somewhat challenging in that it was sad to think of the way people can be treated.”
Annie Sprinkle, performance artist

“(Out of Isolation) about the nurse and the institutionalized man stretches time in an almost painful way, a true horror film in the deepest sense, imaging that life, knowing that is basically the way it is for many people, and I appreciate you making that, and showing it on your site. Of course, the nurse’s lines were funny, as well, keeping it from pure pathos, and the beginning was so mysterious, really brilliantly drawing us in and pushing us away cyclically.”
Tantra, artist

This video explores what happens when people of all types and ages are given a chance to return to being a kid again. A simple game of dress-up becomes a powerful metaphor for dropping taboos, releasing creative emotion, and for dramatic change. As a result, an innocent eroticism is found ... as well as getting intimate with 60 humans. 1984.

Feisto - a video by Frank Moore
On the surface, it is your standard story of a clothes designer who finds a creature (guess who!) definitely not from HERE who totally turns her life upside down. But what it really explores is the warm playing erotic small sexual messy fun turned-on reality between two people ... an ice cream cone melting throughout life!

Filmed in the mid-80's, edited in 2001. The reason for the gap of over fifteen years between the shooting and the editing was that I was waiting for the technology for me to edit at home on my computer so that I could do special effects.

A surreal, visual poem of found images. This is a long collage, combination of found and performance material, "about" my philosophy of performance and life. Very trippy! 1984.

I edited THE OUTRAGEOUS DREAM, etc with two remotes taped on a table before me using my head pointer.

A live cabaret show that breaks through the limiting taboos, through messy nightmares, into the dreams of all possibilities.

Recorded at Berkeley Square, Berkeley, California. 1988.

The band PSYCHOTIC PINEAPPLE was doing a comeback thing in the early nineties and asked me to double bill with them at their Halloween show. Apparently when they were kids in the late seventies, they saw my OUTRAGEOUS BEAUTY REVUE, and thought if I could have a band, why couldn't they start their own band.

Anyway, this show built to a reality destroying climax within the last three acts! So be warned!

Fairytales Can Come True

This is a film about relationships and disability starring Frank Moore, who has been disabled since birth with cerebral palsy. It is a humorous, yet realistic look at how to establish relationships by changing negative self image. 1981.

("Fairytales Can Come True") "stayed in my mind far more persistently than I first expected, at least based on what the film-makers with millions of dollars at their disposal call 'production values' and 'professional polish'.

----------
FAIRYTALES CAN COME TRUE is my first movie and most "normal." Saying "first movie" is misleading. I had been reading HOW TO [write scripts, direct, edit film, etc ] books along with books on radical theater [I read all kinds of stuff] when I was a teenager, and wrote scripts that always had a role for me. But I was mainly a political radical back then [among other things]. But in the early seventies I wormed [I am good at worming!] into an intensive in-depth film course in Santa Fe. It was mainly for anthropologists to learn how to make 16mm field films! I pop up in the strangest places! But after the five month, five days a week, six hour a day course, I didn't have money to make film [and couldn't cut film, had to wait until video!]. So I went into performance art.

In the late seventies in San Francisco I was doing THE OUTRAGEOUS BEAUTY REVUE for three years at The Mabuhay gardens, a punk club. An independent producer approached me and offered to do a feature film based on the O. B. R. which I would come up with, star in, and direct [my directing was my primary condition of doing the film]. So I wrote a treatment. We spent a year doing the Hollywood thing, working with screen writers, going to Los Angeles to cast it, flying the actress up to rehearse, etc. But when the producer came back from Florida with the backer's money, he informed me I couldn't direct! So I walked!

So I came up with a totally different story, when I was panhandling in San Francisco I found a guy with a super eight camera and did FAIRYTALES for about $300! Then I enrolled in the San Francisco art institute Master's program in large part to transfer the film on to video so I could edit it myself.

I thought I was making a rough draft to show backers to get money to make the real movie. But it was picked up by a special ed distributor because it was the first film about how to develop a full relationship....rather than a boring explicit how to sex film. it was sexy, funny, dealing with real issues that everybody deals with but many crips think are special crip issues…and it was made by a crip! Crips loved it. But the film wasn’t selling. It turned out that the people who buy those films weren’t crips…but hospital administrators and the like, and parents of crips, etc….people, with the best intentions, but also with vested interest in keeping crips not functional. They felt the movie gave people “false hopes” [an interesting concept]! It didn’t matter to them that most of the people in the cast were in such relationships. “Well, that is a fluke…not real life!”

Once there was a guy in a psychology class at which I was lecturing. After the class, he invited me to do something at the adult drama class he was doing at the C.P. Center [really a daycare warehouse]. He warned me that they rarely respond. So Linda and I went there to show fairytales. When we got there, most of them were sitting there in a fog, heads bent. But my being with Linda started a low-level buzz! Then during the 30-minute film, they went through an amazing transformation. They sat up and got excited. And after the film, they wanted to talk. THESE PEOPLE RARELY TALKED! But that day they were saying things like: “my sister does not want me to date. She doesn’t want me to get hurt. But I want to risk it!” The teacher was excited about the breakthrough. He actually thought he was hired to make breakthroughs! He wanted me to come back. But a few days later he called me and told me the director of the center had banned me from the center because the crips had been harder to control because they had a whiff of possible freedom…the whiff labeled “false hopes”!

I think this captures the true dynamics of such institutions…but also of our society as a whole. Breakthroughs to new possibilities, freedom, human connection, etc. are relatively easy [surprisingly] to induce by art, etc. But such breakthroughs are threatening to the control of the powers…and hence censorship of all forms! Btw, the director of the center was himself a crip…and had been in my community/theater group.

This raw video documents the tacky, musical, over-the-edge comedy revue that Frank created, directed and performed in. The show ran on a weekly basis for three and one half years at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco, starting in 1978, in addition to a number of other Northern California and Nevada performances. Frank performed along with the thirty people who made up his theater group, "the theatre of human melting".

"A stinking success….Outrageously obscene….Dynamic….Total madness" Ivan Sharpe, San Francisco Examiner

"The inundation of freaks, exhibitionists and the seriously deranged was so heartening" John Wasserman, San Francisco Chronicle

"Mondo Bizarro" Bay Guardian

"A great time with…wacky routines and erotic dress." The Spectator

National Critics said:
"Underneath…lies a certain perverse genius."
"Chuck Barris can’t even compete with The Theater of Human Melting."
"A rollicking theater featuring everything from comedy to musical performances and oddball entertainment."
"If yours is a demented state of mind, you’ll love the show."
"A stage show unlike any you have ever seen."

"We haven’t heard the last of the Fab Mab. Hot on the heels of the recent live reunion show for survivors of the ‘70’s-80’s punk-rock sanctuary comes a new documentary video, The Outrageous Beauty Revue, that captures one of the legendary Mabuhay Gardens’ most perplexing regular events. The OBR shows were evidently bizarre enough to impress the likes of Karen Finley and the late John Wasserman, and filmmaker Frank Moore was there to capture it, another piece of eccentric San Francisco pop culture history: nudity, lunacy, and the Theater of Human Melting." Attempts to capture the trance state of live, shamanistic performance combining footage of several of Frank's performance group, Chero Company's rituals into a reality-warping video.

Frank Moore wrote:
Folks, if you ever wondered what our erotic all-night ritual performances are like.... but for some reason haven't come to one ... This 20+ minute collage of a few events will give you a hint of what you have been missing!

Frank Moore’s Cherotic All-Star Band at The 14th Annual Hollywood Performance Marathon, Saturday, January 17th, 2009 held at the Theatre of NOTE in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.

Frank Moore wrote: Being in The 14th Annual Hollywood Performance Marathon at/for Theatre of NOTE also gave hope for what people can create together. Theatre of NOTE is a closely-knit community. And The Marathon is an amazing 12+ hour show made up of all kinds of performances flowing in a relaxed, warm, and fun atmosphere. But the show stayed on schedule like magic! The show started at 2p.m ... we were supposed to go on at 10p.m. ... we hit the stage at 10, give or take 10 minutes. That is very hard to pull off! The stage crew was amazing!

My band was made up of Cherotic All-Star vets ... except for our drummer. Our scheduled drummer couldn’t make it because of car problems. But the drummer of the band that played after us filled in. But before we went out on stage, he found out it would be a 30-minute non-stop jam. He was over heard nervously telling his girlfriend “it is all one movement ... I haven’t done that before!” After our set, he said when we started he fell into the groove! It was great magic jazz! It is amazing what happened in that half hour on stage. But that damn pant’s button ... a nightmare of horny teenage boys in the backseat at the drive-in !

Feisto Trailer

A video by Frank Moore. On the surface, it is your standard story of a clothes designer who finds a creature (guess who!) definitely not from HERE who totally turns her life upside down. But what it really explores is the warm playing erotic small sexual messy fun turned-on reality between two people ... an ice cream cone melting throughout life!
